Horseback
With its 1200 km of official bridle paths through a variety of landscape from coast to mountains, vineyards, forests, garrigue and along lakes the Languedoc-Roussillon is a fascinating riding area - throughout the year and for riders of all levels of competance. One can cross the whole of the Languedoc-Roussillon in the South of France on the « Trans-Equestre Régionale » to the Spanish border. Some parts of the famous remote-hiking route GR10 have been opened for horses, so one can follow the mountains of the Pyrenees from East to West.
The most famous routes for horse riders are the Sentier Cathare and Trans-Equestre Régionale: Sentier Carthares starts at Port-La-Nouvelle on the Mediterrenean Sea and follows the route through the Pyrenees, the Departement of the Aude to Foix in the Departement of the Ariège. One crosses the departements from East to West, following one of France's most famous tracks. You will discover the famous Carthars' Fortresses, such as Peyrepetruse, Puivert, Quéribus and the mystic Montségur.
The Trans-Equestre Régionale intersects the Departement Aude from North to the South, starting in the Montagne Noir, passing Carcassonne and Limoux, capitol of Chardonnay and Blanquette, reaching your destination at the castle of Puilaurens.

In the Departement of the Aude it is the beautiful Lac de Montbel, which invites you to enjoy this and many other kinds of watersports.
Canoe and Cayak
Rent a cayak or even bring your own and enjoy the torrents of Orb, Aude and Hérault or discover the fascinating Gorges du Tarn. The beautiful valley of the Aude, with various renting spots for canoes or cayaks, offers calm spots as well as wild mountain torrents.
In Axat, on the foot of the pyrenees, the national French canoe competitions took place in 1999. Canoes and cayaks may be rented - amongst others places - at Limoux, Quillan, Alet and Couiza.
